Mike Vax is one of the outstanding trumpet players of our generation.  Early in his career he played lead trumpet on the world famous Stan Kenton Orchestra and  was also Road Manager for the Kenton group.  Later he played lead trumpet for The Dukes of Dixieland.  He has performed with numerous jazz stars, including Art Pepper and Clark Terry.

Before Kenton died he indicated that he did not want a "ghost band" to continue touring under his name.  Thus for many years the unique sound Kenton and his musicians created was not heard except on recordings.  But in 1995 Mike Vax organized a "Kenton Reunion" for the 25th Anniversary of the Morningside College Jazz Festival.  The resulting collection of former Kenton players turned in a solid performance that was the start of a renaissance of Kenton style music.

In subsequent years Vax and an outstanding collection of former Kenton musicians has brought back the style Kenton made famous as the "Mike Vax Big Band featuring alumni of the Stan Kenton Orchestra."

The 1995 Morningside Jazz Festival was professionally videotaped.  This unique event can be relived by viewing the remastered DVD of the event.  You can order the DVD from Master Source.
